Inspired by his years as a clinical psychologist, first-time author, Dan Dylan, writes about the cycle of abuse in his novel, “Chameleon” (ISBN 1439234140). Adults interested in psychology, sociopathy, and the cyclical nature of child abuse should find this novel realistic and gripping. Retired FBI profiler John Foster, Ph.D., now a respected Chicago psychologist, has diagnosed and treated mental disorders throughout his career, but he finds himself seriously challenged by the diagnostic puzzle presented by suspected sociopath Eddie Vinson. Foster becomes snared in a lethal game of one-up-manship and must draw on his years of professional training and experience to anticipate Vinson’s actions as he consults with law enforcement to bring him to justice. Foster’s brief therapeutic contacts with Vinson yield a complex clinical picture, but there is sufficient evidence to indicate that Eddie Vinson was a victim of chronic parental neglect and repeated sexual abuse. Thus, “Chameleon” chronicles the evolution of a child victim to adult sociopath whose actions and distorted views of self and society perpetuate the cycle of abuse. "Incidents of abuse grab headlines and occur every minute of every day,” Dylan said. “Neglect and abuse have consequences that impact us all. In the absence of treatment, some abused children can–and do–become abusive or violent adults.” With more than 35 years of practice in clinical psychology, Dylan has witnessed the cycle of abuse firsthand, often spanning multiple generations, and in extreme cases, adult survivors of abuse pass on to their children the trauma of their own victimization. Using fiction as his medium, Dylan shares with his readers one psychologist’s perspective of child abuse and its ramifications.
Chameleon eBook Dan Dylan
This book was referred to me by a friend and what intrigued me from the start was the Author's own experiences throughout his life and using that experience to create this story and character, who I am happy to report, will be unveiled again in his next book. The premise is quite believable, the characters have depth and humor is dispersed throughout which collides head on with the creepiness of the "patient", a man named Vinson.Once I picked the book up and began to read I could not put it down. I am thrilled to be able to have read this 1st novel straight "out of the gate" if you will, as I feel I have discovered what I consider to be an Author that will soon have an impact in this genre and will be around for a long time. My only regret is that since I did discover him so soon I cannot immediately start reading the next in his series! I will wait patiently...
One other thing not related to what is inside the cover of this mystery is the quality of the binding! A high quality glossy cover with great art coincides with the quality of the written word it holds inside. Not just a "pretty face" as some books will lead you to believe. I highly recommend that you grab this title and immerse yourself!
I am truly impressed with Dylan's 1st work. Great job!

Chameleon eBook Dan Dylan Reviews
This book was recommended by a friend on Facebook. I admit, I stayed up until 400 a.m. the first night I started reading it because I kept reaching the end of a chapter and was compelled to keep going! I think that is the definition of a page-turner! You can absolutely tell that this was written by a seasoned psychologist. I learned quite a lot during this romp of a read! The plot was fast and unpredictable. The protagonist and supporting characters were deep, humorous, and realistic. But man, Eddie Vinson? Just wow. I enjoyed Chameleon to bits.
What a great first novel. What am I saying? This would be a great fifth or tenth novel. The characters are well-developed, the plot is engaging (never boring) and rhe pacing is tight. I can't wait to read more about the protagonist. As a forensic psychologist myself, I can attest that Dylan is spot on in describing the work, the thinking, and the challenges of the job, without overloading the reader (as many psychologist novelists do) with demonstrations of esoteric knowledge or ethical pronouncements. With this book, I believe we are witnessing the introduction of a major voice in this genre. Thanks Dr. Dylan.
A really great read that was definitely written by a psychologist
I bought Chameleon within minutes of receiving my Touch and was not disappointed with either. After working all day and having two small children to keep me busy, many times I fall asleep while reading at bedtime and only get a few pages in. I found myself reading Chameleon until midnight on several occasions and having to make myself put the down. Dan Dylan does an excellent job of giving those of us without a psychology background enough clinical information to keep it interesting and relevant without being patronizing. The pace of the story was fast and furious without any slow or dull points, and I can honestly say that Eddie Vinson (although fictitious) spooked the heck out of me! All in all it is a great first from what I hope will be a longtime author.
Happily married psychologist John Foster thought he left the criminally insane behind when he retired as an FBI profiler. However, the arrival of a new patient, Sonya Vinson, who is concerned over her husband's newly erratic behavior, throws Foster back into the fray. Foster's advice to his patient, that she go somewhere safe until her husband comes for an appointment, pits him against Eddie Vinson. And, Vinson's reaction to the doctor's advice begins the cat and mouse game that ensues.
Dylan's portrayal of the warm relationships between Foster and his family and friends is in sharp contrast to the character of Eddie Vinson who exhibits no concern towards anything other then his own survival.
I found this book to be thought-provoking, disturbing and endearing as Dylan brings his characters to life. A truly compelling read leaving me hungry for more.
Reading this book was so intense! Every character became a real person to me. It was like binge watching a TV series like The Killing or Happy Valley - every person is so developed that you really care about them. I wouldn't be surprised if John Foster isn't one day on screen. I really hope the second book is out soon, It's like waiting for Netflix to release the next season!
I went into this book expecting it to be a standard psychological thriller, but it wasn't standard at all. What sets this book apart from others of its genre, in my opinion, is the detailed description of the character's backstories. The author's background in clinical psychology shines through and as a reader you come to know the characters in detail.
It was an enjoyable read, with a plot that unfolds the only way a plot of this kind can; you know within the first chapter what the destiny of the antagonist will be. It is the journey to that point that this book explores in-depth, and the journey was illuminating.
